When he was born his father named him Columbus. Growing up he lost contact with his father. His father left Africa to work in America to make more money and give him a better living. In school they would make fun of him because of his name. As he grew older he always wondered why his father named him Columbus. The more he thought about him it the more he started looking into history
and wanting to know more about America and about Christopher Columbus. So one day he decided to start searching for his father and decided to take a journey and leave Africa. He was about 18 when he came to America. When he left Africa he first arrived in Iowa. He started looking through records and addresses and was able to find information about his father. It turns out his father was living in Kansas. So when he calls, the wife picks up, and she asks him you said you wanted to speak to my husband.? he says yes. She says who is this.? he says this is Columbus, his son. She asks him why did i never hear about you before? he says because I was out in Africa, and she says okay puts down the phone, and it went dead for a couple of minutes. She comes back on the phone and it sounded like she was crying, and she said okay when do you want to come, and he says well I am out in Iowa and im driving so it going to take me a little while. So he drove all the way to Kansas and made it to their house he knocks on the door the wife answers and when she sees him she almost automatically started crying. He's concerned and asked her why are you crying did I do something wrong did I saying something wrong, and she looks at him and tells him.... your father passed away a week ago, he just missed him. He stood there emotionless and didn't know what to say or what to respond. He just looked up to the sky and after a while says my name is Columbus i have been looking for him for so many years and finally ive found him and now I can't even see him again. They Both started crying together. After, they took him to his fathers grave, so he can say his last goodbyes and say his prayers. When hes at the grave he says to his father, What you predicted came true and I came here to America searching for you. He would tell his father that he didn't like his name when he was younger, but his father always told him never change his name there's a reason why hes giving him that name and because of that he also gained courage to leave his comfort zone and travel to America. So I ask him a question that I ask almost everyone I said... I said do you think its possible for the world to achieve unity for everyone...? he says well the way the world and things are happening its a little more difficult to do it nowadays but, he says. When I was in Iowa there weren't dark skinned people there. It was me and one other guy. When he met me he invited me to his catholic church and I went because i was catholic too. When they were in the church towards the middle of the ceremony they all get up and turn to him and started welcoming him into the church as being a new member to the family. He was in shock because he didn't expect that. While growing with the members of the church he said was a great experience because when they welcomed him the way they did it was he would go to a different house's every other day to learn about a new family, and they're culture, and he was also able to teach them about Africa and his culture. They were amazed by everything they were learning because they knew about what they heard, but they never actually met a person that came from Africa. He said it's a learning experience because here is no such thing as racism because if its not taught to a person they won't know what it is. Learning and embracing each others culture can bring us together if we understood one another a little better.
